Documentation

Before reading this documentation, keep in mind that Shift has been designed to meet anyone's requirements. There is no single correct way to use it, and the more creative you get with it, the better your results will be. That said, getting creative starts with understanding how Shift technically works, which is exactly what this guide covers.

Color Management
Camera Input
Automatically select your camera's LOG format and convert it to Rec.709 Gamma 2.4.

On set use case Convert LOG to Rec.709, apply corrections, build a film look, then export a .cube LUT to load directly into your camera monitor. As a DIT, build a reference LUT with the DP and Director using test footage, then export a .shift preset for the colorist. Presets are adjustable, LUTs are not.

Color Correction

Shift automatically balances luminance, chrominance, and white balance by analyzing the image pixel by pixel. It applies conservative corrections to protect your footage's original character. Use it as a starting point, then adjust the sliders manually as needed.

Exposure
Increases or decreases overall image brightness.
Gamma
Adds or reduces contrast using a filmic curve that does not affect color saturation.
Gamma Curve
Sets the midpoint of the contrast curve. Lower values brighten the image, higher values darken it.
Chroma
Adjusts color intensity using a color contrast algorithm rather than a standard saturation boost, for cleaner color separation.
Chroma Curve
Shifts the color contrast balance between cool and warm tones.
Temperature
Balances the image between cold and warm.
Tint
Balances the image between green and magenta.
Color Grading
Film Stocks
Applies a city-labeled look preset to the Color Grading sliders. All values remain editable after applying.
Subtractive Color
Reduces color luminosity to produce pastel tones, giving digital footage a more filmic feel.
Color Mix
Balances Subtractive Color across the R, G, and B channels independently, for relighting a scene and preserving skin tones.
Shift W / W Curve
Color contrast between green and magenta, inspired by Fujifilm. The Curve adjusts the balance between the two.
Shift X / X Curve
Color contrast between cyan and red, inspired by Kodak. The Curve adjusts the balance between the two.
Shift Y / Y Curve
Color contrast between blue and yellow. The Curve adjusts the balance between the two.
Shift Z / Z Curve
Color contrast between red and cyan, the inverse of Shift X. The Curve adjusts the balance between the two.
Burn
Warms the image using a unique algorithm.
Advanced Settings
Temperature Pull Tint
Links Temperature and Tint, pulling Tint as Temperature is pushed.
Temperature Push Tint
Links Temperature and Tint, pushing Tint as Temperature is pushed.
Temperature Pull Chroma
Links Temperature, Chroma, and Chroma Curve to create a color compression effect.
Enable Curves
Toggles control over the W / X / Y / Z Curves. Disable to optimize panel space.
Enable Panel Mode
Hides selected sections to optimize the display on Blackmagic Design Mini and Advanced Panels.
Import / Export Preset
Saves or loads all slider values as a .shift file for archiving, sharing, or transferring between machines.
Export LUT
Exports a 33 or 66 point .cube LUT for camera or monitor preview use on set.
